Volunteering is a great way to get outside and learn about our local nature.

The following are local volunteer opportunities that are not officially organized by Longfellow MS. Let the organizers know your students age when you sign up. These programs do have adult supervision and welcome middle schoolers.

  • Earth Sangha (Native Plant Nursery)

Volunteering at Earth Sangha is fun because of the strong sense of community. Be sure to go with your student to help them learn the ropes. There are weekly Sunday volunteer slots, seed cleaning in the winter, and invasive removal at Marie Butler Levan preserve near Longfellow.

  • Invasive Removal (Arlington)

Arlington County parks have regular weekly events removing invasive plants. You can look at the schedule and see what fits for your students. In the past Longfellow students have enjoyed the Tuckahoe park (which is close by) removals held on Saturdays.

  • Arlington Restoration

Arlington County has close by plant restorations, citizen science projects and its own native plant nursery. In the past Longfellow students have planted pollinator gardens at Gulf Branch.

  • Invasive Removal (Fairfax)

Fairfax County also has invasive plant removal programs.
